Folk etymology attributes the name "Puerto Princesa" to a princess-like maiden who in the early days is said to have roamed around the place on certain nights of the year. (wikipedia)

Dubbed as the "Last frontier", Puerto Princesa is the second largest city in the Philippines(Davao city being the largest), about 567 kilometers from Manila.
How's Palawan circa 1998?
With our valuables secured in our pension house, we wasted no time on our our first day and toured Former Speaker of the House Mitra's ranch where the famous Honda bay is best viewed from afar. Butterfly farm was next, while the Crocodile Farm gave us a lecture on this amazing reptiles and how they are being cared for in captivity. Very informative, indeed!

Crocodile Farm, Estrella Falls
Third day was alloted to Estrella falls, which was a mystery in itself. Beautiful cascading waters, though I had a traumatic experience here because I nearly got drowned.
Known for its numerous dive spots and white sandy beaches, island hopping is top priority for sure. My fave is Pandan island, boasting of a white, fine sandy beach. I remember it was here that we got to conversed with some of the locales and eventually offered to try their famous exotic food/delicacy, "Tamilok"(shipworm)*. I opted not to. I must confess I'm not that adventurous when it comes to food. *wink*
We snorkeled and got our tan at Snake island and passed by the famous Dos Palmas resort. Lucky enough to get a sight of Lu-Li island, short for "lulubog o lilitaw" in Tagalog, which means the island comes into view, depending on how high or low the tide is. One can't forget Starfish island too, obviously named as it is because this is where starfishes abound.

The highlight of our trip was the very early and long but worthy road trip to the St. Paul's Subterranean Park or the Underground River.

For four days we witnessed Palawan's rich culture and serene vestal landscapes. I hope they will maintain its unpolished beauty because I don't mind going back. I had one of the best trips in this lifetime. Sana maulit muli!
